Simulation techniques are increasingly being used for training of rail road personnel- train operators, traffic controllers and engineers largely due to effective training, availability of real life simulation solutions and advent of highly advanced computer based graphical interfaces.
These "virtual" simulations [where actual players use simulated systems in a synthetic environment] are found to be more appropriate for metro system.
Driving Simulators for train operators are now the most widely used training equipment used globally due to their numerous benefits. Some are illustrated below:
- They permit training in real-life environment and are able to simulate most unusual occurrences.
- Training of new train operators can be done in a safe environment without any damage to the vehicle or fear of an accident.
- A driving simulator would also save substantial amount of money especially if the cost of track occupancy is considered.
- The simulator is also used by experienced drivers to practice skills and refine their techniques.
- These simulators provide a perfect virtual working environment allowing exposing train operators to various different situations in surroundings that emulate their daily working environment or even a future workplace.
- Furthermore, simulators can be used in training to handle malfunctions/incidents and operating sequences in hazardous situations.
- By using simulators, the quality of training can be enhanced while at the same time reducing training time and guaranteeing a constant high level of proficiency over the long term.
The Academy has multiple state of art driving simulators, to train its Train Operators. Out of these two are full scope simulators for ROTEM (RS-1) and Bombardier (RS-2) trains while third is Motionless Simulator for Hyundai-ROTEM (RS-10) trains.
RS-1 (ROTEM) Train Simulator
This simulator is basically for training of Train Operators on Rolling Stock RS-1 (ROTEM), which is running on Line 1, 2, 3 & 4 (Red, Yellow & Blue-Line). This is a full scope simulator with six degrees of freedom of motion system.
Users experience realistic failures which are very rare to create on real train. Instructors can easily build any failure/incident scenario using the interactive toolbox and have full control over events during the exercise. With the toolbox, the instructor can influence the exercise at any time by changing elements such as clouds, weather conditions, availability of equipment, complexity of the failure, signal status etc. This makes every module dynamic and realistic. A detailed log of all actions allows evaluation and It is a state of the art Train Simulator with six degree of freedom motion system. It is capable of providing Trainee Train Operator with almost real experience of train driving with real time provision for the simulation of Train Malfunctions and unusual incidents. Some of the features are:
It includes computer generated Image of all the lines in which broad gauge trains are operating i.e. Line 1, 2, 3 & 4 of approx. 135 Km. and five different depots.
- 279 Events and Malfunctions of RS-1 train are simulated, providing a facility of giving exposure to train operators almost all important events/malfunctions.
- Capable to simulate both ALSTOM and SIEMENS signalling system.
- Not only for rolling stock failures, training can be imparted on this simulator for Signal, OHE and Track failures.
- Special six different rescue scenarios are created to train the staff in case of rescuing a disable train by other train and by Locomotive.
- Training for different procedures during various environmental conditions e.g. foggy weather, rainy weather etc. with concerned effect on the rolling stock.
- Other than the simulated train driven by trainee, there is a provision for automatic train which can be introduced on a set interval on opposite line.
- Provision of controlled train to be driven by automatic or by instructor to simulate different real time situations created by other train on same or opposite line.
- Facility to record and replay the training session for training analysis.
- Instructor station to incorporate planned scenarios and real time changes during a session with full monitoring of all panels of cab through 06 different LCD monitors.
- Observer station with sitting capacity of 15 trainees to visualize the ongoing scenario with 06 different 40” LED monitors. Trainee can raise observation in a real time scenario by pressing a marker button.
- All driving exposure is self-analysed by simulator against different training templates and result is prepared automatic assessment after the exercise.
RS-2 (Bombardier) Train Simulator
This simulator is basically for training of Train Operators on Rolling Stock-2 (Bombardier), which is running on Line 2, 3 & 4 (yellow & blue line). This is a full scope simulator with five degrees of freedom of motion system.
This simulator is also having all features of RS-1 simulator; some of the features which are different from RS-1 simulator are as below:
- Capable of providing Trainee Train Operator with almost real experience of train driving with real time provision for the simulation of Train Malfunctions and unusual incidents.
- Includes computer generated Image of all the lines in which broad gauge trains are operating i.e. Line 2, 3 and 4 of approx. 235 Km. with five different depots.
- 250 Events and Malfunctions of RS-2 train are simulated in it, providing a facility of giving exposure to train operators almost all important events/malfunctions.
- Capable of simulating different platform scenarios including passenger entanglement in door etc.
- Observer station with sitting capacity of 15 trainees to visualize the ongoing scenario with 06 different 52” LCD monitors. Trainee can raise observation in a real time scenario by pressing a marker button.
RS-10 (ROTEM CBTC) Train Simulator
This simulator is basically for training of Train Operators on Rolling Stock-10 (HRC), which is running on Line-7 (Pink Line) & Line-8 (Magenta Line). This is a Motionless Simulator.
This simulator is having all the features of RS-10 train which is based on CBTC technology. This simulator is capable in simulating any failure/incident scenario using the interactive toolbox and has full control over events during the exercise.
- Desktop type simulator which has 4 Desktop Work Stations for training of 4 trainees at a time in each Simulator.
